Environmental policy

The Surefoot Effect was set up with the belief that businesses are responsible for achieving good environmental practice and operating in a sustainable manner.

We committed to minimising our environmental impact and continually improving our environmental performance as an integral and fundamental part of our business strategy and operating methods. We encourage our clients, suppliers and all business associates to do the same.

Our policies:
  • Minimise The Surefoot Effect’s impact from daily office work. The Surefoot Effect has never had a physical building. We communicated, prepared and evaluated work with the clients from home offices and always delivered workshops and events at the client’s premises or hired venues.
  • Minimise energy and water usage where we hired premises, and help other occupants to do this as well. For example, we didn't use projectors and PowerPoints unless absolutely necessary and turned off all electrical equipment when not in use.
  • Minimise our consumption of natural resources, especially where they are non-renewable. For example, we used ceramic cups and plates rather than disposable ones.
  • Minimise our waste and then reuse or recycle as much of it as possible. For example we ensured caterers used prepare just the portions needed and that any left over food was taken away for eating later and any food waste was composted properly.
  • Minimise transport via online meetings with clients, partners and internal meetings in Surefoot. For example, we since our inception in 2012 used online tools and phone calls for planning meetings.
  • Use walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing as our preferred means of transport, when we did have to travel. For example, we provided training in Switzerland for 6 years, always travelling from the UK by train.
  • Minimise any impacts from our operations on the physical environment and local community. We always ensured there is minimal or no air, land or water pollution from our activities and that local communities had only the good things left from our presence.
  • Purchase products and services that do the least damage to the environment and encourage others to do the same, particularly our own suppliers. For example, we used recycled paper when we did have to print but kept printing to a minimum.
  • Assess the environmental impact of any new processes or products we intend to introduce in advance. For example, we kept our physical technology purchases to an absolute minimum and bought refurbished equipment and repair wherever possible.
  • For face to face workshops, incorporate being in nature where possible. This is to support individual wellbeing and strengthen the connection to nature.
  • Provide healthy, plant-based, sustainable, locally-sourced, low packaging, and most often organic, refreshments where The Surefoot Effect was responsible for events. For example, we ordered local, seasonal, minimally processed vegan food for catering.

Given our work was focused on engendering action to tackle the climate and ecological emergencies, we ensure we keep abreast of the latest news and information in this sphere and regularly canvass a variety of sources. https://350.org/ is a long running and very reliable source of information, for example.
